Diversity is at the heart of the cloud native open source movement, and we believe in diversity-powered resilience — that together we are stronger, faster, better, and more innovative.
Together, we make the open source ecosystem a place where everybody can thrive. As part of our ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion, we want to provide a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience.
What are we doing?
We’re following the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 and aiming for Level AA accessibility. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible for people with disabilities and more user friendly for everyone.
This site has been built using code compliant with W3C standards for HTML and CSS. The site displays correctly in current browsers and using standards compliant HTML/CSS code means any future browsers will also display it correctly.
How are we doing?
We have built the site with the following features to achieve Level AA accessibility:
Skip link
At the top of every page, there is a link marked “Skip to content” that is activated by the tab key. For those primarily using a keyboard to navigate the site, tapping enter on it will take you directly to the main content and skip the navigation.
Color contrast
Most text on the site is dark on a white background for optimal contrast and legibility. All other text has been checked to make sure it meets the minimum contrast ratio.
Page zoom
To accommodate people who prefer reading larger text, page functionality will remain intact at all zoom levels.
Reduced motion / show animations
All modern operating systems provide a setting called “Reduced Motion” where users can indicate they prefer less physical motion on-screen. The CNCF site respects this setting and stops animations, video autoplay, sliders and transitions for users when this option is selected.
Markup for screen readers
Our website has implemented titles, alternative text for images, separate sections for navigation, content and footer, and uses ARIA to improve the screen reader’s capability.
Areas still needing work
We’re working hard to achieve our goal of Level AA accessibility, but we realize there are some areas that still need improving.
Many blog posts on the site contain complex technical diagrams and charts. Where possible we provide alternate text for these images to capture their contents in textual format. Due to the complexity of some of these diagrams, however, it’s not always practical to create a text equivalent.
Additionally, there are images that show code in some of our old blog posts. Even with alt text defined, the full contents are not available in textual form. We are committed to ensure that all new blog posts, however, provide code directly in html and not as an image so that it is accessible to all.
How can you provide feedback?
We are continually seeking out solutions that will bring all areas of the site up to the same level of overall web accessibility. In the meantime, should you experience any difficulty in accessing the CNCF website, please don’t hesitate to contact us or submit an issue to our GitHub repo.
