Project post by OpenTelemetry maintainers

It’s been quite the year for us, and we’re eager to share some updates on the strides we’ve made. I’d like to start out by thanking our contributors and community – your support and contributions have been invaluable, and together, we’ve achieved some notable milestones.

General Availability of OpenTelemetry Logging

Great news! OpenTelemetry Logging is now available in several languages. With the 1.0 release encompassing traces, metrics, and logging, we’ve fulfilled our commitment to providing a unified framework for cloud-native telemetry.

OpenTelemetry Protocol (OTLP) Reaches 1.0

Another highlight of the year is the OTLP hitting its 1.0 version. This solidifies its place as a stable foundation, and we’re thrilled to see its growing adoption within the open-source realm. Notably, Jaeger has integrated OTLP natively, and Prometheus is on its way to doing the same.

Collaboration with Elastic

Earlier this year, we embarked on a collaborative effort with Elastic to align the Elastic Common Schema with OpenTelemetry’s Semantic Conventions. This ongoing project promises to deliver a comprehensive metadata specification, shaping the future of structured telemetry data in cloud-native systems.

Looking Ahead

Our roadmap for the upcoming year is pretty exciting. We’re setting our sights on introducing continuous profiling and extending our support to front-end/client instrumentation.

Community Highlights

A big shoutout to our growing community! 2023 saw an unprecedented surge in active contributors. A record-breaking number of nearly two thousand developers contributed in Q3 alone. Our contributor base now boasts representation from over 200 companies and sees participation from 1000 developers monthly. From end-users to major cloud providers, the spectrum is vast and diverse. Additionally, many organizations have implemented OpenTelemetry, sharing their experiences through our End-User Working Group.

Thank you for being a part of this journey. Here’s to more innovation and collaboration in the days ahead!
