KubeCon + CloudNativeCon + Open Source Summit China 2023 is just around the corner, kicking off with Co-located events on Tuesday, September 26, followed by two full days of sessions on September 27-28.

We’re thrilled to welcome the community back together in person for the first time since 2019! The event co-chairs worked hard with the program committee to create an exciting and informative schedule covering cloud native experience from novice to expert on topics including platform engineering, observability, security, and more. We talked with the Co-chairs, Fog Dong and Kevin Wang, to learn more about their cloud native ecosystem experience, why having KubeCon + CloudNativeCon + OpenSourceSummit in China is important and what they are looking forward to most about the event.   

Fog Dong is a senior engineer at BentoML, a maintainer of KubeVela, and a CNCF ambassador. 

Kevin Wang leads the cloud native open source team at Huawei, has contributed to CNCF projects, including Kubernetes, KubeEdge, Volcano, and Karmada, and has been a contributor to the CNCF TOC.

What are you most looking forward to with being a KubeCon + CloudNativeCon + Open Source Summit China co-chair?

Fog: As a co-chair for KubeCon China, I eagerly look forward to connecting and collaborating with brilliant minds across the cloud native ecosystem. KubeCon China provides a platform for experts and practitioners to come together and discuss the latest trends, challenges, and advancements in the cloud native space. Being a co-chair gives me the unique opportunity to engage with this community, learn from their experiences, and share my own insights.

Furthermore, I am deeply committed to giving back to the community and promoting diversity within the tech industry.   Embracing diverse perspectives drives innovation and creates a stronger, more connected community. By fostering inclusivity and valuing underrepresented voices, we can shape the future of cloud native technologies in a positive and impactful way.  This role as co-chair allows me to actively contribute to creating a positive impact and shaping the future of cloud native technologies while cultivating an environment that values diversity and fosters inclusivity.

Kevin: I look forward to learning about the innovative exploration and practice in the ecosystem, the user stories of cloud native technologies being adopted in various industries, and understanding the challenges people face from different perspectives, such as maintainers and end users.

I also look forward to collaborating and interacting with more community members to promote the development of cloud native.

What has been your involvement in the cloud native community? How did you get started? Any advice to those looking to get started in cloud native?

Fog: My involvement in the cloud native community began as a developer, where I actively contributed to open source projects and engaged with the cloud native ecosystem. I found a passion for cloud native technologies and their potential to transform the way we build and deploy applications. Over time, I became the maintainer of KubeVela and a CNCF ambassador. As part of my commitment to supporting and nurturing the community, I actively served as a mentor for programs like LFX and GSoC. I recognized the importance of guiding and helping others who were starting their journey in the cloud native world, and it was a rewarding experience to witness their growth and success.

For those looking to enter the cloud native space, I advise diving into open source, continuously learning, and gaining hands-on experience. To begin your cloud native journey, dive into open source projects that align with your interests and skill set. The cloud native community has a wealth of mature and friendly projects with supportive communities, so don’t hesitate to get involved, seek mentorship and share your insights. By actively participating in the cloud native ecosystem, you can expand your knowledge, contribute to the community, and open doors to exciting opportunities.

Kevin: I’m now a CNCF ambassador, one of the first Kubernetes maintainers from China, and co-founder and maintainer of multiple CNCF projects.

My journey with Kubernetes and the CNCF community started in 2015. Back then, I was helping some customers transition their traditional business to the cloud, and I identified some enhancements for Kubernetes as part of that work. 

From 2015 to 2018, I led the development of advanced scheduling features and subprojects for Kubernetes. Starting in 2018, I spent more time growing the ecosystem by co-founding multiple open source projects, KubeEdge for edge computing, volcano for AI/ML workloads on Kubernetes, and Karmada for multi-cloud Kubernetes orchestration.

The open source community around cloud native is a vibrant and inclusive place. I’d recommend that everyone who wants to or is just starting to use cloud native should join the open source community. Learning user cases, participating in community discussions, etc., are very helpful in staying tuned for technology updates.

Have you attended KubeCon + CloudNativeCon + Open Source Summit events in the past? What has your experience been like? 

Fog: While I haven’t attended KubeCon events in person in the past, I have had the opportunity to attend virtual KubeCon events. I found the experience to be profoundly inspiring. The virtual format allowed me to access a diverse range of sessions, engage with industry experts, and connect with fellow attendees from all over the world. Engaging with the community virtually, I connected with like-minded professionals, shared experiences, and collaborated on ideas. The inclusive and welcoming atmosphere made it easy to establish connections and expand my network within the cloud native community.

While I look forward to attending KubeCon events in person in the future, the virtual format has proven to be a fantastic way to engage with the cloud native community and stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in the field.

Kevin: I started attending KubeCon in 2017 in Berlin, and every KubeCon has brought me new experiences. In addition to participating in breakout sessions (listening to others’ presentations or sharing by myself), I also communicate with many community members, exchange views, and discuss community collaborations.

Over the years, I have participated in many in-person community discussions at KubeCon and witnessed and joined the establishment/kick-off discussions of new projects, feature enhancements, and working groups.

Why should people attend KubeCon + CloudNativeCon + Open Source Summit China this year? Any advice for first-time attendees?

Fog: Attending KubeCon + CloudNativeCon + Open Source Summit China this year offers compelling reasons for participation. The event acts as a magnet, drawing together a diverse community of cloud native enthusiasts, experts, and industry leaders. It presents invaluable networking opportunities, enabling attendees to connect with professionals and gain insights into the latest trends and advancements in cloud native technologies.

Kevin: KubeCon + CloudNativeCon is a premier vendor-neutral technical conference on cloud native technology. It gathers top experts and key maintainers of popular cloud native projects. Attendees would gain an in-depth understanding of key technologies and how to adopt them in their own environment. 

KubeCon + CloudNativeCon + Open Source Summit China offers 100+ sessions, including technical sessions, deep dives, case studies, and more. These sessions are very helpful in building knowledge on best practices and new trends in the rapidly evolving cloud native ecosystem.

Since KubeCon has rich content, I would suggest that first-time attendees prepare in advance by marking topics of interest and contacting speakers they wish to communicate with. In addition to the 2-day official conference content, the Day0 co-located events are also fruitful and worth attending. The KubeCon exhibition area is also a vibrant place to visit and explore

It’s been a few years since we’ve been able to gather in-person in China – what does it mean for the community to be able to meet again face to face?

Fog: Being able to meet in person again after a few years is incredibly important for the cloud native community. There’s something special about connecting and collaborating with others face-to-face. It allows for a deeper level of connection, collaboration, and shared experiences that cannot be replicated in virtual settings alone.

For individuals, attending an in-person event provides an opportunity to connect with others, expand their network, and gain insights that go beyond what can be conveyed virtually. In-person interactions provide a deeper level of connection, allowing for richer conversations, non-verbal cues, and forming personal bonds. These face-to-face engagements enable individuals to establish lasting relationships, exchange ideas more effectively, and build a stronger sense of camaraderie within the community. 

For the community, being able to meet in-person signifies a renewal of the sense of belonging and unity within the cloud native ecosystem. It provides an opportunity to strengthen relationships, foster new collaborations, and build a stronger network. Moreover, meeting in-person reinvigorates the community’s spirit and enthusiasm. It creates a sense of excitement and anticipation as individuals come together to celebrate their shared accomplishments and envision the future of cloud native technologies.

Overall, this upcoming gathering presents an excellent opportunity for everyone to unite and continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the cloud native space. I am thrilled to be a part of this exciting event and look forward to the energy and inspiration it will bring to the entire community!

Kevin: The most exciting thing about attending KubeCon in-person is that it allows people to meet like-minded friends, share learnings, highlight innovation, and discuss the future of cloud native computing. In recent years, there have been many exciting changes in the cloud native technology ecosystem both in China and globally. This year’s KubeCon China is the first in-person event since the pandemic and has been eagerly anticipated. I can sense that there will be many discussions, innovative ideas, and community collaborations emerging from in-person interactions.

Q: Any other thoughts you want to share?

Fog: I am truly honored to serve as a co-chair for KubeCon + CloudNativeCon + Open Source Summit China this year. Collaborating with fellow co-chairs and the wider cloud native community, I am excited to contribute to an informative and engaging event that helps the community grow. My goal is to help the community grow by sharing knowledge, supporting others, and cultivating an environment where everyone feels welcome and valued. I’m eager to see what new ideas and projects will come out of the conference that will shape the future of cloud native technologies. I look forward to connecting with others in the community and learning from their experiences and perspectives.

I wholeheartedly encourage everyone to seize the chance to attend KubeCon China this year, whether in-person or virtually.
